As a fourth-year student at the University of Victoria, Kate is fully immersed in the world of Chemistry for the Medical Sciences. Still, she finds her bliss in exploring the abundance of Vancouver Island through outdoor activities like hiking, camping, and skiing. Alongside her scientific endeavours, Kate thrives as a member of the VIV team, where she delves into the creative realm of writing. As she prepares to graduate this spring, Kate continues to intertwine her passions for science and storytelling. She eagerly anticipates furthering her education in green chemistry and looks forward to engaging in solutions for a more sustainable future.
Julia Burden

Meet Julia, a budding educator-to-be and avid reader, hailing from the halls of UVic’s English department. With aspirations to inspire young minds in high school classrooms, Julia’s journey into the world of education is just beginning. When she’s not buried in textbooks or crafting lesson plans, you’ll find her lost in the pages of her favorite novels, savoring every word. This article marks her debut in “Vancouver Island Voice,” a milestone she eagerly anticipates. But rest assured, this is just the beginning for Julia. She is eager to make waves with her writing and teaching aspirations, eager to leave her mark on the literary and educational landscape.
Rhys Butterfield

Rhys is an aspiring lawyer, majoring in English at University of Victoria. His career is just beginning, and he spends most of his time serving at the Old Spaghetti Factory or completing assignments. He is a local to the island who tries hard to represent it accurately and respectfully in his work. The world of academia is daunting and overwhelms his foreseeable future, yet his VIV debut serves as a foundation for the academic journalism field.
Mariska Hermano

Mariska is a first year student at the University of Victoria. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts double major in English and Environmental studies. Mariska was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. She is excited to offer her perspective as an out of province student with a wide variety of interests to Vancouver Island Voices readers. When she is not working in the library with an oat milk London Fog and a playlist consisting mostly of Taylor Swift, Mariska can be found in the theatre, anywhere where there is sunlight, or in the middle of several craft projects.
Adrianna Hilton

Adrianna is a first-year student-athlete at the University of Victoria. She is currently studying social sciences working towards a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in communications and journalism, although as a first-year student she expects to change her mind many more times. Adrianna is very much still an apprentice of the writing trade, being a student, this is her first publication. When she is not in class Adrianna is a member of the Varsity Women’s soccer team at UVic and can be found training or travelling with the team.
